Journeys End V1 Chardonnay 2023

R205.00

Clear and bright, straw with a hint of green. This vintage is showing more restrained delicate citrus fruit and orange blossom characteristics. The wine has a beautiful vanilla oak aromatic due to the 9 month barrelling period. The palate is smooth, with a zesty finish from the fruit and acid combination. Drink now with potential aging until 2020.

Description

V1 CHARDONNAY 2023

W.O. Stellenbosch

Winemaking Notes

The Grapes were picked from vineyard blocks 2C, 11 and 16D resting on soils consisting of the Oakleaf and Tukulu types. These two soils are closely related and express high clay content increasing the vineyards fertility. Water drainage is good creating a perfect medium for production of high-quality Chardonnay grapes. The decomposed granite content of the soil tends to add a flinty mineral element to the wine and the vineyards proximity to the ocean promises a subtle salinity.

Grapes are subjected to a combination of whole bunch and destemmed pressing. Only free run juice was used to produce this wine which was cold settled before being transferred into a combination of French oak barrels (10% new, 70% second and third fill), concrete eggs (12%) and clay amphoras (8%) for fermentation and maturation. An extended lees contact of 9 months with regular battonage was exercised to incorporate mouthfeel. Only 10% malolactic fermentation was allowed to retain balanced acidity, zestiness and freshness. The wine was stabilized using bentonite and is vegan friendly, bottled in January 2024.

Tasting Notes

Clear and bright, straw with a hint of green. The wine shows delicate citrus fruit and orange blossom characteristics. This is a fruit forward wine with a smooth pallet and zesty finish due to restrained malolactic fermentation. Well balanced with subtle lactone notes providing layered complexity. The natural incorporation of mineral and saline notes promises a unique coastal style Chardonnay which will reward patient cellaring. Drink now with potential ageing until 2024.
