Journeys End Cape Doctor ‘The Red’ 2018

R400.00

The Cape Doctor is the local name for the strong South-eastern wind that blows from false bay and funnels through to Cape Town and Blouberg. The Cape Doctor works his magic blowing away smog and impurities to clear the skies and make way for some fresh sea air. The Cape Doctor is so often cited as a negative factor and can play havoc with the vines at flowering.  For Journey’s End it brings benefits through the resulting long ripening period of the grapes which produces concentrated berries with fantastic firm acidity. It also minimises the risk of any fungal diseases on the vines. Try spawning in a 65KMpH wind!

Description

CAPE DOCTOR BORDEAUX 2018

W.O. Stellenbosch

55.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 5.5% Malbec, 5.5% Cabernet Franc, 5.5% Petit Verdot

Winemaking Notes

The grapes come from five blocks on the farm which rest right next to one another stretching between 180m and 215m above sea level. Our proximity to the ocean guarantees fresh natural acidity and mineral salinity. The grapes are uniquely influenced by the nearby Eucalyptus forest which also serves as a wind break against the powerful Cape Doctor wind.

The grapes from each block were picked and treated separately utilizing both stainless steel tanks as well as 5000L truncated open top casks. Each varietal underwent a 4-day pre-fermentation cold soak before fermentation was initiated. After fermentation, only the Cabernet Sauvignon was subjected to a two-week post fermentation maceration to ensure a solid tannic structure before the wine was subjected to a 22-month barrel aging period. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot components are matured in 100% new French oak with the other varietals being matured in second fill French oak. The selected barrels were then blended before being filtered and bottled. This wine is vegan friendly.

Tasting Notes

This wine exhibits fruits on the darker side of the spectrum with cassis and rich fruitcake on the nose accompanied by cinnamon spice and dark chocolate from generous oak ageing. Concentrated dark berries are complimented by a creamy texture with soft elegant tannins delivering a beautiful long-lasting finish. Despite the current appeal, there is enough underlying power for a long future ahead. Drink now or up until 2027.
